Arpeggio kings. In the 1930's the then emerging era of Two / Five / One diatonic slice and dice, the arpeggio figure begins to be the new cool for improvised lines. Built by simply respelling out the diatonic pitches, all the theory was already in place and under everyone's fingers to begin the organic evolution to "Giant Steps."

Saxophonist Coleman Hawkins forged a new structural model for American improv based on a song's cycle of chord changes. His seminal 1939 recording of the pop standard "Body And Soul" creates what becomes a new way forward for our melodic line. A new pathway yet one still true to our blues and gospel roots that provides room for a new diversity of harmony.

For the theory, the arpeggiated figure perfectly replicates the tones of any chord. It turns out that it was only a matter of velocity that held back the next generation of our theory evolution. To knowledgeable ears, i.e., we musicians ourselves, that arpeggios clearly sound out a song's harmony, chord progresssion etc., that if played fast enough in succession it would indeed create a sound like regular chords being struck, thus creating another opportunity for 'new changes' to evolve their music.

Saxophonist Charlie Parker, hailing from from Kansas City probably had a 1930's regular public school music education. Might have played recorder or a kazoo in 3rd, maybe the the clarinet in 4th then sax in 6th. By the 8th grade, students have full command of the 12 pitches and basic reading skills.

Like so many of our innovative leaders in any discipline, Parker's bio tells us of a restless, youthful artist pushing on the existing musical boudaries of his day. Unsuccessful in historically documented first attempts, arpeggios will become Parker's 'proof' that his newly forming ideas about harmony and their color tone extensions were not only true to the core jazz Americana, the blues but a new and exciting way forward for the American musical arts.

Parker goes on to slice up the diatonic pie into it's slimmest harmonic pieces ever imagined without ever losing the same diatonic core that has centered our musics since time immemorial. His compositions are of full of new harmonic explorations; 'Blues For Alice' changes, nicks each of the 12 root tones somewhere along the way, each providing a triad and color tones for Bird's blazing arpeggiated figures. .

Saxophonist John Coltrane ascends a dozen or so years later and begins his own journey through the harmony. Picking up where Mr Parker left off, Trane devises new cadential motions based on the common diatonic evolutions supercharged by Bird. Once set in motion, Trane's own exploration of chord substitution energizes a quest that becomes his signature 'sheets of sound' of the mid 1950's; blazingly articulated arpeggios of the combined substitution possibilites of dominant harmony (V7b9). Once the diminished V7b9 is exhausted, Trane shifts explorations towards whole tone possibilities and discovers a new, never done before, harmonic motion by combining two very common intervals in a totally brand new, super exciting way.

If there was ever a cat in my book who was able to find the 'perfect chord for any spot' while using mostly open chords and simple barres in conventional tuning, when composing original songs, it's surely got to be John Lennon. Of course he had help in this with his band mates Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.
